On the Edge of the World

Spin was commissioned by the British Council to create the catalogue for the exhibition 'On the Edge of the World'. Starting at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, this exhibition draws from the holdings of the British Council Collection and the archives of the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and aims to give a glimpse into how contemporary artists of the present and expeditionists of the past and have been making connections between humankind and nature. Organised as part of the Darwin Now programme, the exhibition follows Darwins journey to South America.

The catalogue aspired to created a bridge between the contemporary and the archival aspects of the exhibition. Comprising of artworks, essays, prose, botanical specimens and interviews, four paper stocks and two cut-short sections are used in order to reflect the diverse range of content. The design uses three typefaces which are employed to represent the contemporary, historical and archival elements. The catalogue is written in English with a Spanish translation. It is constructed with an open spine with a partial linen wrap and is covered in bible paper to convey the idea of discovery.
