Founded in 1901 as one of the first publicly-funded galleries for temporary exhibitions The Whitechapel sits in the heart of London’s East End. The identity is created from a series of building blocks or units which connects with the area’s history and the way generations of immigrants and have created the vibrant character it has today.
Commissioned as part of a major expansion programme, the identity has been developed as a response to the growing stature and ambition of The Whitechapel. The bespoke typography is given space and clarity in the top part of a graphic plinth, the bottom of the plinth is a place holder for more detailed information. Images are cropped to give a sense of being close to the art. The overall effect is of a confident and contemporary gallery that shares its elevated position with the artists it champions.
