Homer’s Odyssey has had many tellings and retellings over the centuries. Like its title character, the text has been taken on journeys that it could never have imagined for itself, passing into legend and metaphor. Ours is a contemporary visual reinterpretation of the myth and a testament to the many afterlives of its narrative. Despite the mystery surrounding its author and composition, the Odyssey is one of the ur-texts of Western literature; a long list of artists, writers and filmmakers have been inspired by its visionary narrative and mythic power. Moving between the illustrative and the graphic, this series focuses on a handful of motifs: the eyes of the Cyclops and Penelope; the driving rain and endless waves of long days at sea; the unsettling figures of the lotus-eaters. The result is an impressionistic interpretation of the Odyssey, a litany of images which re-transmit this tale again.
